RT @Jim_Allison Reflections on my first EdCamp. Thanks @aakune @terryainge and DSS! @EdcampLdrBC #edcamplbc #edchat http://expandmythinking.blogspot.ca/Jason Leslie
Over the weekend, Delta Secondary School hosted EdCamp Leadership BC. For those of you who are not familiar with EdCamp, please see this post from first time EdCamper, @Jim_Allison (honestly a great read for anyone!) One of the most popular sessions was facilitated by DSS students @antonytsui and Manisha Bains. The session proved to be very popular with many of the unconference participants as well as a number of followers in the Twitterverse. The students shared their perceptions about the current use of technology in school and posed questions to the educators about how teachers could be encouraged to design learning to increase engagement and to leverage the technology that is currently hidden or underutilized in their classrooms.
Cell phones and personal electronic devices have long been a hot button topic in schools. However, teachers and students are beginning to see the potential of mobile technology as a tool in increase learner engagement and in-depth learning.

Still cell phones and mobile devices are frequently seen as distractions in today's classrooms.
RT @ChrisWejr: Student: "if I am engaged… I never check my phone" #edcamplbcNicole Archard
More respect for teachers from students if technology is not banned from class compared to those who do. It has to do with trust. #edcamplbcC Younghusband
What was striking about the dialogue was that much of it veered away from technology an focussed largely on good teaching practice.
Our discussion about technology has turned into a discussion about learning. #edcamplbcdavidwees
We have to shift away from being the gatekeepers of knowledge... #edcamplbcMaricel Ignacio
student says "#edtech is like a portal to the outside world, makes what I'm learning more relevant" #edcamplbc -- connected to real worldBrian Kuhn
As teachers gain confidence in the use of technology in their classroom, they can advance beyond substitution to practice that is truly transformational.
RT @davidwees: How do we help teachers leverage technology as more than a fancy presentation tool? #edcamplbcAlexander MacDougall
We have to be careful that we don't just do tech because it is fun/cool - there must be a purpose to enhance learning #edcamplbcChris Wejr
One takeaway from EdCamp for me is the notion of a flattened hierarchy, where the teacher is no longer the holder of the information. The format of EdCamp encourages students, teachers, and parents to participate in open and honest dialogue. It was inspiring to see 21st century co-created learning in action!
@HHG #edcamplbc format levels the learning hierarchy - how can we make this part of regular practice? .. co-creation, that's my takeaway.Terry Ainge
The discussion is about how to teach in the 21st Century. It's not necessarily about technology. It's about mutual teaching. #edcamplbcC Younghusband
Student: Try to learn from us too. Reminds that 21st cent learning is about dialogue between learners (students & teachers both) #edcamplbcKathryn O-C
"I learn from peers, I learn from discussion. When a teacher lectures for most of a class, they are stealing my learning time." #edcamplbc”Tammy Dewar
#edcamplbc "don't want to be tested on my knowledge anymore, I want to be tested on my ability to use it and apply it"Remi Collins
Co-creation requires a shift in how we think about the role of the teacher. Parents, teachers and students need to understand the value of co-creation and be willing to explore shared leadership, which means giving up some of the teacher control. It is helpful to see mistakes as a part of the process of learning.

An uncomfortable but necessary mindset: As the teacher, I don't need to know all the answers #edcamplbc @elaanBetty Fei
<3 this @elaan Create a community of learners, and teacher doesn't need to know the 'answers', no one does, but all can discover #edcamplbcDavid Truss
Our students are living in a digital world outside of school.
"Technology is an extension of ourselves." #edcamplbcC Younghusband
How can technology be incorporated successfully in today's classrooms?
